700 bags of chemicals washed ashore

Ben Tre – 700 nylon bags containing a thick, black liquid that smells like tar drifted ashore in Binh Dai are being collected.

On the afternoon of March 13, people in Thua Duc and Thoi Thuan communes, while fishing, discovered hundreds of black bags that had been washed ashore by waves and scattered for dozens of kilometers, so they reported it to the local authorities.

Mr. Vo Van Quan, Vice Chairman of Binh Dai District People’s Committee, said that because some bags were torn, chemicals spilled out, smelling like oil.

“This substance is most likely crude oil or asphalt, a total of 700 bags, each weighing 25 kg, have been collected,” Mr. Quan said.

Because there are many clam farming areas in the area, and there is concern about the impact, the local government has reported to the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment to take samples for testing to see what substance it is, in order to have appropriate handling.
