2. Characteristic
HNO3 – Pure Nitric Acid is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor, specific gravity 1.526 at 15℃. When chilled, it solidifies into colorless crystals. Melting point (-41.3℃), Boiling point 86℃.
Nitric Acid (HNO3) also known as aqua fortis, is a strong inorganic acid with high corrosive properties. The pure compound is colorless, but older compounds tend to have a yellow cast due to the accumulation of nitrogen oxides. Commercial nitric acid has a concentration of 68%. When the solution contains more than 86% HNO3, it is called fuming nitric acid. Depending on the amount of nitrogen dioxide present, fuming nitric acid is described as white fuming nitric acid or red fuming nitric acid, at concentrations above 95%. Nitric acid is also commonly used as a strong oxidizing agent.
