HNO3 – Pure Nitric Acid is a colorless liquid, pungent odor, specific gravity 1.526 at 15 oC. When chilled, it will solidify into colorless crystals. Melting point (- 41.3 oC), Boiling point 86 oC.
Nitric acid (HNO3), also known as aqua fortis, is a strong inorganic acid with high corrosiveness. The pure compound is colorless, but older compounds tend to acquire a yellow cast due to the accumulation of nitrogen oxides. Commercial nitric acid has a concentration of 68%. When the solution contains more than 86% HNO 3 , it is called fuming nitric acid . Depending on the amount of nitrogen dioxide present, fuming nitric acid is described as white fuming nitric acid or red fuming nitric acid , at concentrations above 95%.
